Francis Henry Lee Society Announced on February 5, 2006.

F.H. Lee Recipients, 2006.
2006 Recipients (l to r): John LePoer, Richard Moriarty, Ledlie Woolsey, Judith Davis, Dorothy Dodge, Robet Lane, and Albert Anderson.

At the Winter Tea held at the Library on Saturday, February 5, the Board of Trustees announced with great pleasure the founding of the Francis Henry Lee Society which has been established for the purpose of recognizing those whose support of the Petersham Memorial Library has been amply demonstrated.

The Society is named for Francis Henry Lee (1836-1913), whose service to the Library sets a standard of selfless and steady devotion to its interests. Membership in the Society betokens demonstration of a high level of time and effort given liberally to the care and improvement of the Library.

The Board of Trustees will honor individuals whose continual and generous support follows the example set by Francis Henry Lee by placing in the Library a book that reflects the particular interests of that individual and is likely to have enduring value in the Library's collection. These books will be identified by a special bookplate adapted from that created by Bruce Rogers for the memorial fund established in F. H. Lee's honor in 1915. In addition, each person so honored will be presented with a certificate of membership in the Francis Henry Lee Society.

The first members of the Society and the books added to the collection in their honor are:

John M. Woolsey, Jr. (1916-2005), accepted in his memory by Ledlie Woolsey
The Smaller Majority: the Hidden World of the Animals that Dominate the Tropics by Piotr Naskrecki.
John Woolsey's service to the Library spanned more than fifty years. Notable among his many contributions are his wise oversight of the Library's endowment and his faithful attention to the Library's book collection.

Albert D. Anderson
Sir Banister Fletcher's History of Architecture, 20th edition, by Dan Cruickshank.

Judith McC. Davis
Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture by Toby Hemenway.

Dorothy L. Dodge
Raggedy Ann Stories and Raggedy Andy Stories by Johnny Gruelle. These are the authorized reissues of the original 1918 and 1920 editions.

Robert M. Lane
Atlas of World History by Patrick K. O'Brien.

John P. LePoer
The Norton Anthology of Children's Literature.

Richard W. Moriarty
The Concise Dictionary of Etymology: the Origins of American English Words by Robert K. Barnhart.

Family members and friends looked on as Library Board Chair Ann Townsend and Vice Chair Thomas Anderson spoke of the dedicated and long-term contributions of each of the seven recipients and presented the certificates and books.
